After two weeks, it is pretty hard to argue that anyone other than the Bergen Catholic Crusaders are worthy of the title of top team in the state of New Jersey (okay, St. Joseph of Montvale could state its case). After blowing out American Heritage (Fla.) in last week’s season opener, the Crusaders once again how dominant they can be Saturday afternoon, as four different players scored touchdowns in a 47-14 victory over St. Peter’s Prep.
And if you ask senior defensive end Frank Feaster, BC (2-0) does not want there to be any doubt whatsoever about who the true top dog in New Jersey high school football is.
“The goal is to dominate every play, we want to keep scoring until Coach [Nunzio Campanile] calls off the dogs,” Feaster said after the win. “But [the Marauders] have the [2014 Non-Public, Group 4 championship] rings on their fingers. Now that we’ve beaten them, now we can truly call ourselves the number one team in the state.”
Feaster himself may have had the biggest play of the game, intercepting Jonathan Lewis to cut off a promising Marauders drive, and returning the pick 25 yards to pay dirt. The touchdown, near the end the first quarter, made the game 13-0, and took away what seemed like St. Peter’s chance to snatch momentum.
“This week, we worked on not rushing [Lewis] too much because he is fast,” Feaster said. “I read three-step drop and just put my hands up and the ball ended up in my hands.”
Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano and running backs Melvin Colvin and Ryan McCarthy each rushed for two touchdowns. McCarthy’s first came near the seven-minute mark of the second on a 10-yard run set up when the Marauders fumbled away a shotgun snap. St. Peter’s Prep (1-1) got its only meaningful score on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Maasai Maynor with 1:16 left in the first half.
BC, the #1 team in the Vita Athletics - Gridiron New Jersey Top 20, will take on IMG Academy (Fla.) -- #17 in the USA Today Super 25 -- next Saturday in Oradell, while the Marauders will host #19 Seton Hall Prep.
