Strength Index, Power Points and OSI

Obviously, New Jersey's 2020 high school football season has been like no other, and hopefully, we'll welcome back a return to normal next year.

As the "Postseason" kicks off this weekend, we thought it would be a good time to take a look at how things would look if this was, in fact, a traditional autumn on the gridiron.

Strength Index has been calculated throughout the season, and just as it did this year, will serve as the benchmark to begin next season's rankings.

OSI, power points and UPR have also been calculated and published online.  Hopefully, these numbers will give some sort of sense of how teams are stacking up against one another, and what potential playoffs brackets would have looked like under normal circumstances.

Meanwhile, here's a look at Strength Index, broken down by Non-Public and Public group sizes.  And as a refresher, taken from the NJSIAA's Football Regulations, "...a team’s Strength Index will move weekly based on the game results compared to the expected outcome of each game. The expected outcome of a game is determined by the Strength Index values prior to the start of the game. For every point off the expected outcome, teams will move by 1/5 (or .2) in the appropriate direction depending the game result. However, please be reminded that a school’s own Strength Index rating has no bearing on its OSI calculation that is included in the United Power Ranking system."
